Pre-Conference Sponsored Tutorials
Monday, October 27 (1:30 - 5:00pm)

Up to six sponsored tutorials may be presented.

Using and Implementing Court Technology Standards

This tutorial is composed of a two-part workshop that will lead attendees through the automated Case Management System (CMS) Request for Proposals (RFP) process. At the completion of the tutorial sessions, attendees will learn how to incorporate the Functional Standards into their own courts' functional requirements document and how to integrate the requirements document into a RFP for a court case management system. Additionally, attendees will learn how to further elicit and gather other functional requirements that are unique to their court business processes and how to draft the end results of the requirements definition phase: a comprehensive list of clear, complete, consistent, and testable requirements for a court software application. The tutorial will focus on real-life scenarios and solutions.

This tutorial is sponsored by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC).

Is Your Court At Risk?

This three and a half hour tutorial will be divided into two parts. The first session is designed specifically for court and justice agency administrators, managers, and judges. The second half of this tutorial is geared for technology professionals. From casual hackers to terrorists, cyber troublemakers threaten the security of your court's network environment, your information assets, the integrity of your records, and your ability to operate effectively. Whatever the motivation, the risk of cyber attacks against your organization is a reality, shadowing the convenience and efficiency gains made possible by the Internet. Jim Gerretson, a renowned expert on cyber security and Director of Information Assurance with ACS, will discuss:

  • who poses the potential threat to your organization
  • what types of threats are possible and likely to occur
  • the relative severity of various threats
  • the actions you can take to assess and address potential or existing problems

This will be an interactive session, during which attendees will see concrete examples of threats and risk management strategies and tactics to reasonably protect your court.

This tutorial is sponsored by ACS.

Improving Court Collections - No Longer an Option

Today’s challenging fiscal environment is requiring that Courts improve their means for enforcing and recovering outstanding Court imposed financial sanctions. Some Courts are even being mandated to become partially or completely self funded.

This tutorial session will focus on the various technologies, tools, and processes that some of today’s innovative Courts are using to increase compliance and collections of judgments, fines, and fees.

This session will educate attendees regarding:

  • Prioritized, simplified, and automated case collections process workflow
  • Substantially increased recovery of outstanding case revenues
  • Improved individual and overall staff productivity
  • Intensive management of accounts with consistent and continual follow-up
  • More accurate reporting and record keeping

Judges, Court Administrators, Court Clerks, Judicial Assistants, Information Technology Personnel, or any other Court staff involved in improving the effectiveness of Court imposed monies are encouraged to attend and will find the session very informative and productive.

This tutorial is sponsored by Revenue Plus a Business Unit of Columbia Ultimate.

Developing and Implementing Court Space Requirements to Maximize Court Technology, Function and Operations

Can your court facility handle the current and future technology requirements? There has long been a distinct correlation between the quality of court facilities and the quality of court operations and service. This tutorial is comprised of a three-part workshop that will lead attendees through the essential planning and implementation steps to a successful technologically integrated and operational facility. Both existing facilities and new facilities will be discussed and court technologies ranging from security, video presentation, recording, and general circulation.

Planning and Programming

Initial long-range planning is essential to realizing future trends and growth in court technologies. The tutorial will lay out all the steps and considerations to achieve a usable long-range plan, or master plan, to ensure that funding requests and subsequent implementation will be made in a timely manner. Programming and projections are of paramount importance to the viability of the long-range plan. This tutorial will present useful and helpful tools to achieve a defensible plan.

How to Marry Space and Technology to Enhance Court Service Delivery

Once the needs are defined in the long-range plan, there is additional planning and assessment of existing facilities and possibly future facilities. This tutorial will present and discuss several case studies to demonstrate viable options for the inclusion or retrofit of court technologies into the physical space.

Security Technologies

Public safety is a primary consideration to courthouse facilities. Security has evolved into an extremely integral consideration to a facility that involves the progression to the site, the site itself, parking, entrances, circulation, courtrooms, etc. This area is so extensive, it will be discussed in-depth in the third section of this tutorial.

Case studies will be presented and discussed.

At the completion of this tutorial session, attendees will understand the importance and value of planning ahead for the inclusion and implementation of technologies to enhance an overall successful court operation. They will be completely prepared to implement their own long-range plan in order to achieve funding and a roadmap to the future.
